Bargaining Update:

Members of CUPE Local 1004 and the Pacific National Exhibition have reached a tentative collective agreement.  A ratification vote will be held in the coming weeks.

The CUPE 1004 bargaining team will be recommending acceptance of a three-year deal with wage increases of 1.5 per cent in each of the three years. The tentative agreement also includes improved contracting out and scheduling language.
CUPE employees at the PNE and Playland include ushers, ticket takers, security, bartenders, ice makers, carpenters, painters, gardeners, mechanics, plumbers, labourers, concession employees, ride technicians, ride operators, games operators, cleaners, administrative workers, parking employees and many others. They work in Playland, on the PNE site, at the Pacific Coliseum and in the other PNE buildings.

1004 PICNIC LIVE - Enormous Success!

We had a fantastic 100th Anniversary Picnic! Over 800 1004 members participated by having a hamburger, hot dog, birthday cake, or listening to a local rockabilly band, and snagging a free anniversary T-Shirt and commemorative pin. Everyone was in a celebratory spirit and had a great time. It was a complete success!

Back in 1911, city workers organized to form the first civic workers union in Vancouver!

Local 1004 will be celebrating 2011 by holding special events throughout the year:

 

April 6  -  Unveiling/Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Vancouver City Hall
MARCH  -  Relaunching of the 1004 Worker newsletter
MAY 7 -  Family Days (truck roadeo)
JUNE 9  -  BBQ / Picnic
AUGUST  -  Pride Parade
SEPTEMBER  -  Labour Day and 1004 Golf Tournament
OCTOBER  -  Gala Celebration - October 30
DECEMBER  -  DVD video or powerpoint of anniversary highlights - presented at regular membership meeting

Events are tentatively scheduled, check the 1004 website and newsletter for updates on events.

Special 100th anniversary merchandise will be released throughout the year, including - t-shirts, stickers, and pins!

An employee survey commissioned by the City of Vancouver indicates less than half of those surveyed have confidence in the leadership of their employer.

Western Canadians support increase in Canada Pension Plan benefits

More than three quarters of western Canadians support increasing Canada Pension Plan benefits, according to a new national survey. Eighty percent also support increasing federal payments to senior citizens and four in ten believe the government is moving too slowly in reforming Canada’s pension system.

The Future of Pensions: Poll Highlights

The Future of Pensions poll was completed by Environics Research Group in late August for the Canadian Union of Public Employees and the Public Service Alliance of Canada. It surveyed 2,020 Canadians and has a margin of error of +/-2.2 per cent 19 times out of 20.
